It's a job interview in a business casual office. Women have so many choices that it gets confusing. Remember, your clothes speak before you do. Your future employer is forming opinions about you as you walk through the door. Those opinions may or may not be true. When you take control of your image, you can focus on other things...like showing how qualified you are for the job.
Step 1:
Pick your third piece first. It can be a jacket, cardigan, or a blouse (with tank underneath). This instantly makes you appear more professional and put together. Think of it as your power piece. It displays your attention to detail and shows respect for the company and people you are visiting.
This third piece covers your "vital statistics". Even if your body is perfect you want to impress your future employer with your intelligence, trustworthiness and integrity. Overtly showing off your figure tells an interviewer that you're not serious about this opportunity, and you have other things on your mind.
Now if you are going to wear a dress, top it with a jacket, too. Yeah, it's two pieces, but you get the idea.
Step 2:
Eliminate the weekend casual wear, including anything sparkly, lacy or shiny or "night-clubby". Remember, you're dressing to impress people in a business casual environment. Your future paychecks depend on your looking just right for this office. A quick note. If you want to wear a tank top, definitely wear a third piece and keep in on through the interview. The more skin you show, the less power you'll have.
Step 3:
Pick garments that work harmoniously with your body's natural coloring. Or another way to say it is to choose neutral or muted colors that flatter you. At least when it comes to your third piece, skirt or pant. There is a reason why business attire isn't as flashy and fun as your casual wear. You may love to wear bright green but if everyone wore bright colors in an office, the staff would be exhausted in hours. But I'm sure you don't want to be boring, either. Add your brighter color in smaller bits or under your third piece. Helpful Hint: Every piece of clothing you wear or accessory you choose should always lead to your face.
Put this amazing outfit on. Look at yourself in the mirror in daylight. Use your hand mirror to check yourself from all sides. How do you look? Smile at yourself and think about all the great qualities you have. Imagine yourself working at this office; happy and healthy.
Now for the details. Check yourself for: uneven hems, shoes that need repair, panty lines, lint, missing buttons, dog or cat fur...
How is the fit? Be sure your clothes aren't too tight or loose. Be sure you look current. Especially when choosing glasses and hair styles. If you don't look current, your interviewer might think your skills aren't current, either.
I want you to look immaculate so your personality and talents will shine through. By preparing before the actual day, you'll have more confidence in yourself. You'll be able to focus on what's important, your connection with the interviewer.
Shine bright and best of luck.
