Advice for consumers
Wearing a regular bra while breastfeeding

bra for breastfeeding

Most new moms understand that breastfeeding is best for baby and leave the hospital with very few practical tips on making breastfeeding easy. Moms who find breastfeeding easy are more likely to continue through baby's first year. Understanding that breastfeeding can be done a lot easier with a regular bra can help.

Step 1:

Decide what kind of bra you like to wear regularly. Look it over to see if it has adequate straps, clasps in the back and if it is the right size. Breasts grow a great deal during pregnancy so it may be time for a bigger size.

Step 2:

Consider trying a sports bra before your baby is born. Sports bras are highly absorbent and give lots of support.

Step 3:

Purchase a bra that has an elastic band. Do not try and breastfeed with an under wire bra.

Step 4:

Choose a regular bra for comfort and support if you don't like sports bras. Your breasts fill and empty several times each day, so something that will move with you is important.

Step 5:

When baby is ready to feed, lift up your bra on the first side. Let it rest about 6 inches above your nipple. This gives plenty of room for baby to latch on and milk ducts to flow freely.

Step 6:

Keep some cloth diapers handy to wipe off your breast before pulling down the cup when you're finished with that side.

Step 7:

Slip a nursing bra pad into your cup when finished to help with leakage.
